Chapter Seven
âHeâs gay,â Hattie announced over lunchtime baguettes in the theatre restaurant. Black and white stills of Leif Haralsson and cast graced the walls. Hattie bowed her head towards the nearest. âHe has a long-term partner heâs been with since college that he adores. I took your advice and chatted to him the other night.â
I knew it, I crowed inwardly, Hattieâs words confirming my suspicion that Leif was already taken. Cute guys always had someone waiting in the wings. Although Iâd have plumped for attached or gay, rather than both. Still, for Hattieâs sake, I muttered a sympathetic âdamn,â around a mouthful of egg mayonnaise.
âNo probs.â
For someone whoâd failed to secure a date with her dream man, she seemed remarkably cheerful.
âSeriously, Hats, Iâm sorry about that. I mean itâs obviously great for him that heâs happily settled, but I know you were sweet on him.â
âPah,â she snorted. âIt always was an idle daydream. I never really believed I stood a chance. I wouldnât even have spoken to him if it wasnât for you.â
âOh, shit! Iâm sorry.â
âLyssa!â Hattie slapped the table in amusement. âIâm not blaming you for anything. Heâs a nice guy. I had a fab evening chatting to him and a couple of the guys from lighting last Friday, and theyâve dropped by the box office a few times since. Besides, it could never have been more than a quick fling between us. He moves around too much because of his acting, and you know how I feel about uprooting. I get traumatised going on holiday for a week.â
âTrue.â Hattie was the biggest home body Iâd ever met. If it wasnât for work, sheâd probably have never left her house.
âAre you seeing the flamenco troupe tonight?â
Momentarily gobsmacked, I stared at Hattie, wondering how on Earth sheâd found out about my boys. I was pretty secretive about them, so I couldnât see how word had got out, unless Victor had started snitching. Not that I actually thought that.
âLyssa?â Hattie prompted a minute or two later. âIâll take that as a no, shall I? I guessed you were planning to go after all the enthusing you did on the subject of wiggling male butts.â
âOh, you mean that flamenco troupe.â
âIs there another one?â
The theatre was hosting an authentic Spanish group that evening, and Hattie was right. I had intended to buy tickets. âI left it too late. We sold out. Besides, Iâm doing something else.â Victor had phoned as Iâd gotten ready for work that morning and arranged the dinner date heâd promised me. I rather hoped that he had something special planned in place of dessert, preferably, which involved multiple senses. It had struck me earlier that there were only so many variations of watching someone bring themself off, and weâd already covered most of them. Hopefully, once weâd exhausted his fantasy, then we could get on to indulging mine.
âAnother date,â Hattie sighed, having finished a delicate bite of tuna. âI wish my love life was half so exciting. Nathan must be completely mad for you.
